The sympathy card should be simple. After signing at the funeral home register, offer your sympathy in person to the bereaved and the rest of the family or you could also leave a sympathy card. If you are sending a card on behalf of your family, get everyone to sing personally before you send it. While you should keep your message short, consider including an anecdote or a short quote about the deceased to indicate how much he or she will be missed.

These days, with the convenience of email, you could opt to send an online sympathy card and include a personal note. This is an option if you live far away and sending a physical card may take longer. Nonetheless, as much as possible consider sending a sympathy card to show your sincerity in offering condolences to the bereaved.
